About Nanjing

Overview

Nanjing, the capital city of China's Jiangsu Province, is an important central city in Eastern China region and the only megacity in the Yangtze River Delta and Eastern China region. Located about 300 km west of Shanghai, Nanjing is the political, cultural and economic center of Jiangsu Province. Covering a total area of 6,598 square kilometers, it includes 11 districts under its jurisdiction. The number of permanent residents totals over 9.5 million. 

Boasting rich cultural heritages, with a city history of 3,000 years, among the first batch of famous historical and cultural cities publicized by China, Nanjing is regarded as one of China's four ancient capitals, also known as Capital of Ten Dynasties and Regimes and City of Humanity. Nanjing is an important center of science and education in China. With a glorious tradition of advocating literacy and education, Nanjing is reputed as China’s culture center and the top seat of learning in Southeast China. Nanjing owns 53 colleges and universities, over one million undergraduate and graduate students, only second to Beijing and Shanghai in China. There are 92 members of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Chinese Academy of Engineering, with the number ranking third among Chinese cities. 

Nanjing is one of the centers of commerce, trade, finance, tourism and logistics in the Yangtze River Delta and an important comprehensive industry production base in China. Nanjing is an important state-level research and education base, a modern service industry and advanced manufacturing base, a Famous Software City in China as well as a Chinese city renowned for Internet plus initiative, intelligent manufacturing and modern service industry.
